Ms. G's Pop-Up Shop brings accessible, sustainable style to students across Los Angeles & beyond by transforming classrooms into a one-of-a-kind in-class thrifting experience that promotes joy, equity, & sustainability.
We strive to empower students to boldly express who they are, all while reducing textile waste, building community, & breaking down barriers of access.
What began inside my Hollywood High School classroom has grown into an independent, community-centered initiative supported by apparel and cultural partners.
CREATIVE APPROACH:
Rather than presenting the initiative as a traditional clothing donation, I design it to feel like a true retail experience. Branding, product presentation, music, and the physical environment work together to make the classroom feel celebratory and intentional.
COORDINATION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Creative Direction: concept, identity, participant experience, promotional materials
Partnerships & Coordination: partner relationships, product acquisition, coordinating clothing drives, inventory, stakeholder communication
Live Production: classroom transformation, volunteers, participant flow, operation and breakdown
KEY PRODUCTION CHALLENGE:
The activation must operate within the physical space and scheduling restrictions of a functioning public-school classroom. Inventory, student flow, instruction, and event presentation all need to coexist without disrupting the broader school day.
THE SOLUTION:
I developed a repeatable operating system for collecting and organizing inventory, preparing the room, communicating with students and partners, and moving participants through the experience. This allowed the activation to retain its warmth and spontaneity while remaining organized and manageable.
OUTCOME:
The Pop-Up Shop grew from a classroom project into an independent organization serving LAUSD students. It has developed partnerships with organizations including Ghetto Rodeo and Recess Kickball League and received digital recognition from The Jennifer Hudson Show.
LESSONS LEARNED:
The project reinforced my belief that strong production builds and uplifts community. Thoughtful systems do not diminish creativity; they create the conditions in which people feel welcomed, confident, and fully present.
